Vehicle Rollovers
When a motor vehicle rolls over, it is usually a terrifying experience, and the consequences may be grave, as they can involve injuries such as spinal cord injury, brain injury, and even death. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that rollovers are dangerous incidents that have a higher fatality rate than other kinds of car crashes. NHTSA data shows that nearly 85% of all rollover fatalities are the result of single vehicle crashes, meaning that most rollover crashes and fatalities do not even involve a collision between two vehicles, and instead simply involve one vehicle.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):
- 4,352 passenger vehicle occupants were killed, and 81,000 were injured in passenger cars involved in rollover crashes during 2006.
- 604 passenger vehicle occupants were killed, and 15,000 were injured in vans involved in rollover crashes during 2006.
- 2,888 passenger vehicle occupants were killed, and 70,000 were injured in SUV's involved in rollover crashes during 2006.
- 2,840 passenger vehicle occupants were killed, and 40,000 were injured in pick-up trucks involved in rollover crashes during 2006.
Under a given set of circumstances, most vehicles are capable of rolling over, however, for a variety of reasons, including the center of gravity of the vehicle, some are prone to roll over based on a simple attempt to maneuver a vehicle. In these cases, the auto manufacturer may be liable under a theory of products liability for a manufacturing or design defect.
